The World in Your Pocket

I recently re-read this account of Mike Mayfield's development of Star Trek (circa 1971-2). A few thoughts follow - on how this relates to Animal Crossing, the metaphor of paper tape as a storage medium, and A Theory of Fun... Then I thought: hold on, Warcraft, Warhammer, Star Wars Galaxies, and the latest big-hitter Guildwars (reputed to have 250k accounts already!) , what -is- it with 'war' all of a sudden?

Another point

Possible point: RMT value is only assigned to the good by the set of layer actors according to their utility functions. Demand for digital goods in the absence of Godly trade in the pure worker economy is zero?" I submit for your comments the idea that the reason many developers have a hard time finding anything of value not only from researchers, but often from their own players, is that they are, in effect, seeing a different world, all the time. They looked friendly enough--at least, no one had fruit ready to throw at us. It was simply kind of surreal, after reading the comments on TN this past week and hearing other things at the conference about the problems with game studies and developer/academic relations.

Possible Implications

Thus any sufficiently heterogeneous set of economic actors in a game will use RMT to change the challenge level of the game to their desired one, seeking to maximize their utility. Consequently the more varied the challenge level within the game is (puzzle made of puzzles) the more possibility of the RMT appearance. After our "high energy" presentation, the questions were even stranger.

Arseni writes

"I'm in somewhat of a problem now, seeking to focus on some particular topics in my research. I'd be really glad if you could ask people on Terra Nova to tell me their opinion on the following passage? The best way to put the assertion (and this is all it is at this point; and again, please keep in mind that there are a number of familiar exceptions) is that the practice of game software development generates a way of seeing and defining problems (as essentially precise, logical, and algorithmic), and creating solutions (through linear, text-defined code) that makes other ways of accounting for what happens in VWs seem at worst nonsensical and at best irrelevant or quixotic.

Maybe the issue is the "larger" community. It's always easy to abstract and oversimplify at that level. But I know that on an individual level, there are real conversations and collaborations going on. I don't want this to turn into some rosy "it's better than we think" or "can't we all just get along" thing, but I do think that perhaps the situation is not as dire as it's hyped to be. But then again, I haven't gotte my evals back yet.
